Two Sam-Son Farm graduates bid to add one more chapter to the Ontario breeder's legacy on Saturday's Breeders' Cup card at Del Mar.
GSW 5yos Gas Me Up and Mission of Joy take to the turf in the Mile and Filly and Mare Turf, respectively, each running for a $2 million purse.
A Hard Spun gelding out of SP Chic Thrill (Smart Strike), Gas Me Up drew post 12 and picks up Jose Ortiz for the first time. The $140,000 Keeneland September yearling owned by Exline/Border Racing and partners returns to the course over which he graduated at 2yo.
In four starts this year, Gas Me Up has progressed under trainer Kevin Attard from allowance to Gr1 company, culminating with a 3rd in mid-September's Woodbine Mile. In his prior start at Woodbine, he rallied from well off-the-pace to land a first stakes triumph in the Gr2 King Edward S. (video) over the same distance.
Woodbine Mile winner Notable Speech (post 2) is Saturday's 5/2 morning line favorite.
Mission of Joy, meantime, steps up in trip once more for the 11-furlong Filly and Mare Turf off a rallying victory in the Gr2 Rodeo Drive over a mile and a quarter. That effort, her first GSW since 2023, followed a come-from-behind 3rd in Del Mar's Gr2 John C. Mabee over nine furlongs.
Umberto Rispoli returns aboard for trainer Phil D'amato and will work out a ground-saving trip from post 1. The 14-horse field, arguably the Cup's deepest year in and out, includes Gezora, Dancing Rain, She Feels Pretty and See the Fire, the latter two having drawn outside.
