A Del Mar allowance run in the buildup to this weekend's Breeders' Cup featured a filly with ample connection to the two-day championship meeting. Sparkle Blue, both offspring and half-sister to past Breeders' Cup winners, made a successful cross-country venture when victorious in a 2yo mile contest on the turf.
The rallying one-length decision marked the second win in three stars for the daughter of Filly & Mare Turf winner Shared Account, whose Speightstown filly Sharing landed the Juvenile Fillies Turf two years ago at Santa Anita. Both siblings and their dam have all come out of trainer Graham Motion's Herringswell Stable, based in Fair Hill, MD.
Bred by Catherine Parke, who campaigns Sparkle Blue in partnership with George Strawbridge, the Hard Spun filly emulated her dam when making a winning debut on dirt. Beholding the same versatile pedigree as her dam, Motion switched Sparkle Blue to the grass for her next start, the Selima Stakes, ironically once one of America's most important 2yo dirt races. Sparkle Blue closed to run fourth ahead of her California sojourn.
Shared Account's own meandering Breeders' Cup journey took her from denying Midday a second Filly & Mare Turf victory in 2010 to less than a year after joining the Sam-Son Farm broodmare band becoming dam herself of a Breeders' Cup winner.
The generational success underscored the influence of Filly & Mare Turf contestants at the top of global breeding. Not only did two-time winner Ouija Board produce Epsom and Irish Derby winner Australia, also Zomaradah, third in the 1999 inaugural running, is most famous today as the dam of leading British sire Dubawi.
Now residing at Gainesway Farm after being acquired for $625,000 out of Sam-Son's Keeneland January dispersal, Shared Account produced a full-sister to Sharing this season and is back in foal to Into Mischief. The Pleasantly Perfect mare's lone Sam-Son bred is 2yo Comparticion, a filly by Mastery.
