Some clever maneuvering by breeder Andrew Rosen and trainer Reeve McGaughey produced a career-best performance from Bees and Honey in Friday's Gr3 Comely S. at Aqueduct.
Co-bred by Rosen's AR Enterprises and Gainesway Farm, the Union Rags filly displayed an affinity for the Comely's nine-furlong route and drew away late to win by 2 1/4 lengths.
Earning his first stakes win as trainer, Shug McGaughey's son Reeve credited both the addition of blinkers and stretch out in distance with the Union Rags filly's season-long progress.
Away a touch slow, Bees and Honey advanced on the far turn under Jose Lezcano to the outside of Played Hard and once straightened by Lezcano, the wide-bodied filly drew off convincingly from Played Hard and favored Crazy Beautiful.
Winning co-owner/breeder Rosen reacquired Wickedly Smart, a full-sister to Gr1 Alcibiades winner Wickedly Perfect, at Keeneland's 2016 January Sale. She was previously a $255,000 Keeneland weanling purchase for Rosen through Hugo Merry Bloodstock, resold for $350,000 the following September and sent abroad to race.
