On Kentucky Derby week, bloodlines tracing back to an American Triple Crown winner's dam brought forth a new prospect beneath the Twin Spires.

Cigarette Boat, a 2yo Kantharos colt and first foal out of Hurstland Farm and partners' Double Cast, finished well over a muddy Churchill Downs track to place 2nd in a five-furlong MSW contest. The $100,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase by Pura Vida Racing finished 3 3/4 lengths behind Three of a Kind, who went wire-to-wire for the victory.

Off a step slow and racing four-wide thereafter, Cigarette Boat improved his position through the last furlong under Joe Talamo, running well over the off-going while advancing into 2nd. After making five starts herself at two, Double Cast thrived with added maturity and distance, lending further optimism toward Cigarette Boat's future off this promising debut.

Kentucky Derby/Oaks ties are strong in Cigarette Boat's Hurstland lineage. Rosalind was a Kentucky Oaks contestant herself, fourth in 2014 behind champion Untapable. Moreover, Double Cast and Rosalind are direct descendants of Marguerite, dam of 1930 Triple Crown winner Gallant Fox, a homebred of Belair Stud.

Double Cast was bred back to Kantharos this season.
