As Cigarette Boat continues pursuit of his 2nd career victory, he isn't returning to the barn short a payday.
The 5yo son of Kantharos finished 2nd for a third straight time in Saturday's Fair Grounds opener over five furlongs, 1/2 length to the well-regarded Boltage.
The first foal out of Hurstland Farm's Double Cast (Broken Vow) has proven his durability over an 18-race career. The now 5yo gelding has won a single race, a MSW at Aqueduct, while placing 2nd/3rd an additional 10 times, good for earnings over $236,000.
In his 2nd most recent start over the same course and distance, the Mike Maker trainee came a head shy of winning for the first time since graduating in late 2023.
Double Cast is out of Critics Acclaim (Theatrical) and raced as a homebred for Hurstland and co-breeder James Greene. Her full-sister, Gr1 winner Rosalind, is dam to three winners, plus the 2yo Tapit filly Magic Notion and a $425,000 Keeneland November Quality Road weanling colt.
Hurstland retained and will race in partnership Cigarette Boat's 2yo full-sister, Toast the Star.
