From a brief stallion career at the same farm on which he was foaled and raised, Doc's Leader made sure to leave a lasting impression.
From the sire of dual Gr1 producer Please Sign In comes another mare at the heart of Hurstland Farm's latest chapter of success. Two daughters of Doc's Leading Lady are already represented in the new year with black-type earners, one a stalwart American campaigner, the other a promising young Australian filly.
Gr2 winner Get Smokin, racing for the first time under new ownership, kicked off his 5yo campaign with a 2nd in Saturday's Gr3 Tampa Bay S.
The son of Get Stormy made his bid to win Saturday's co-feature for a second straight year in familiar style, on the lead. Clearing the field into the first turn of the mile fixture, Get Smokin led the field into the home stretch and was surpassed only by Shirl's Speight, who closed with an eye-grabbing rally.
The race marked Get Smokin's fourth runner-up stakes finish in his 16-race career, over which he has also landed three stakes, including the Hill Prince at Belmont Park. Dam of Get Smokin's 3yo full-sister She's Smokin, 4th in her lone start at two, Hookah Lady is due back to Get Stormy for a third time.
During the week prior, Latizia returned off a New Year's Day debut win to place third in the Gr3 Blue Diamond Preview. The fleet filly contested the pace from a wide break and held 3rd as the favorite to remain under consideration for the Gr1 Blue Diamond St. on February 26th .
The Australian-bred is the first foal out of Spanish Pipedream, MSW daughter of Scat Daddy and Doc's Leading Lady.
