A poignant arrival came early among this season's foalings at Hurstland Farm. Hookah Lady, a rising star in the Hurstland broodmare band, delivered early last night a full-sister to MGSW Get Smokin.

The foaling took on added meaning with the surprise news just a few days later that sire Get Stormy had passed away unexpectedly at Crestwood Farm. The three-time Gr1 winner was 16yo.

Bred to the popular son of Stormy Atlantic three times in four seasons, Hookah Lady proved an immediate match with the son of Stormy Atlantic. Her first foal from the mating, Get Smokin outran his modest $10,000 yearling price from the onset of his career and remained a consistent presence in stakes company ever since.

Currently just shy of $500,000 in career earnings, Get Smokin was a sharp 2nd to Shirl's Speight in last month's Gr3 Tampa Bay S. while making his seasonal debut. Get Smokin is 2nd leading-money winner among his sire's progeny, trailing only Got Stormy, who emulated Got Stormy with three Gr1 career victories.
