From the Big Apple to Down Under, Love Cove's 3yo Anegada has turf stakes success throughout his pedigree. Little surprise then that before season's end trainer Mike Maker found a suitable course for the gelding's first black-type success.

The son of Midshipman out of the Not for Love mare earned that first black-type win Sunday in Cicero, Illinois, landing the $150,000 Hawthorne Derby.

Scratched the day prior out of a Keeneland allowance, Anegada proved the conditions at Hawthorne a perfect fit following close finished this summer in Kentucky and Virginia. Luis Colon held up his mount until the turn for home, then steered Anegada toward the rail inside Maui Strong and Buttons and Lace, prevailing at the finish by a 1/2 length.

Bred in NY by David Cassidy, Love Cove has produced eight winners to date, all reared at Hurstland Farm; her daughter Bibby (Stormy Atlantic) is dam of Australian Gr3 winner Junquiera.

Now 21yo, the dual NY-bred stakes winner foaled an Echo Town colt this past season for Leonard Supchak, breeder of Anegada.

Love Cove's dam Sand Pirate (Desert Wine) also produced Sweet Vandetta, winner of the Gr2 Black-Eyed Susan S. and Half Heaven, another stalwart NY-bred.
