Spring has sprung, and Hurstland Farm resident Hookah Lady has already enjoyed as exceptional one.
The Smoke Glacken mare was flattered this past week by both a winning return from GSW Get Smokin, preceded by the $650,000 sale at OBS of his 2yo 1/2 brother.
Sunday at Gulfstream Park, 6yo Get Smokin regained his winning form in racing 7 1/2 furlongs. Taking his customary place atop the 12-horse field, the Get Stormy gelding hugged the rail into the home stretch under Tyler Gaffalione and turned back a prolonged bid from Saratoga Flash.
Victory atop the four-way photo marked Get Smokin's first since the Seek Again S. at Belmont Park in May of his 4yo season.
Originally an $11,000 yearling purchase by Phil Hager on behalf of his sire's owner/breeder Mary Sullivan, Get Smokin pushed his earnings over the half-million dollar mark with this latest win.
Producing forward, strong-bodied offspring has become a hallmark of Hookah Lady's, and her Vino Rosso colt of 2021 was no exception. Maturing rapidly following his $35,000 Keeneland September purchase, the colt sold at the March Sale in Ocala to Alex and JoAnna Lieblong.
Both Hookah Lady progeny were bred by Alfred Nuckols' Hurstland in partnership with Jamie Greene. The 12yo mare is due to Classic Empire, sire of Saturday's Arkansas Derby winner Angel of Empire.
