Sparkle Blue, a filly with a glittering pedigree, is beginning to show signs of being a special racehorse in her own right.
The Graham Motion trainee far outran her 31/1 odds when runner-up to Spirit and Glory in Tuesday's $300,000 Woodford Reserve Virginia Oaks at Colonial Downs. The Hard Spun filly out of Sapphire n' Silk, the Smart Strike mare who also produced Breeders' Cup winner/producer Shared Account, was coming off a victory in Laurel Park's Christiana S.
Freshened nearly two months off that triumph, Sparkle Blue prompted the pace throughout and turned for home right in the thick of contention. She remained right there until deep stretch when only the strong finish of Spirt and Glory proved better. Sparkle Blue held 2nd in the 14-horse field by 1 1/4 lengths, same as Spirit and Glory's winning margin.
Sparkle Blue is campaigned in partnership by breeder Catherine Parke and George Strawbridge.
Shared Account is represented in the upcoming Keeneland September Sale with a full brother to Sharing, her Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf-winning daughter.
