Wintry conditions Saturday night at Woodbine turned into a snowy romp around the track for Get Smokin.
The Hurstland Farm graduate by Get Stormy out of Hookah Lady (Smoke Glacken) made all the pace through the steady snowfall (video) to win the $141,130 Gr3 Valedictory Stakes by 3 1/4 lengths.
Winner of the 1 1/2 mile fixture four of the previous six years, trainer Mark Casse confidently pointed the 7yo gelding for only his 2nd career start on the all-weather. A newer-found affinity for longer routes which has helped Get Smokin double his career earnings over the past two years, however, would again be his best asset.
Get Smokin set a moderate pace through the opening mile under Sahin Civaci before drawing clear into the home stretch. Classic Mo Town was along for 2nd and Loose Wire, 3rd.
Owned by Ironhorse Racing Stables LLC, BlackRidge Stables LLC, Saratoga Seven Racing Partners and T-N-T Equine Holdings, Get Smokin now has earned $2.13 million.
Descendant of a Hurstland family which also produced champion Dayatthespa, 11yo Hookah Lady is dam to Get Smokin's 2yo full-sister Smoldering Ash and a weanling Practical Joke filly.
