Something above the norm was required to land Friday's competitive CTT and TOC S. at Del Mar. In runner-up Scarabea's case, it was all in the genes.
The Calumet Farm homebred finished 2nd by a 1/2 length to Sister Otoole in the 11 furlong test, continuing a productive stretch for the American Pharaoh filly out of MSGW Starstruck (Galileo).
At 4yo, Scarabea has found her best stride at the same age her Irish-bred dam blossomed in the U.S. Scarbea became the Irish-bred' mare's 2nd black-type offspring when runner-up in Santa Anita's Possibly Perfect S., also a Listed test, earlier this summer.
Imported after an initial season back home, Starstruck immediately took to American racing under new trainer Larry Jones. Winner of her stateside debut at Churchill Downs, she followed up with her first of two victories in Monmouth Park's Gr3 Matchmaker S. (photo), landing the N.J. standard again at 5yo.
Bred by Mrs Marguerite Weld, Starstruck is out of Gr3 winning sprinter Agnetha (Big Shuffle), full-sister to leading German sire Aerion. Her first foal Turf War (War Front) won the Listed Christiecat S. at Belmont Park.
