'Winning takes talent; to repeat takes character.' This winter Destino d'Oro has repeatedly put both qualities on full display.
The 4yo Bolt d'Oro filly out of Heart of Destiny (Lion Heart) extended her winning streak with a stirring come-from-behind triumph in Saturday's Gr2 Hillsborough S. at Tampa Bay Downs.
The Hurstland Farm graduate rallied up in time to edge Whiskey Decision for her 2nd Gr2 victory in a row, and 3rd straight overall.
The path to victory in the nine-furlong supporting feature was not entirely straightforward. Approaching the far turn Junior Alvarado ran up in close quarters and was forced to steady Destino d'Oro, causing a brief retreat to the rear of the seven-horse field.
Alvarado and Destino d'Oro, toting high weight of 123 lbs., quickly regrouped before securing a wide but clear path into the home stretch.
Afforded an extra half-furlong than in her prior two races, Destino d'Oro reached even terms with Whiskey Decision, bidding for trainer Chad Brown's 8th Hillsborough, and nosed ahead in the final bob.
Proctor Street finished a neck back in 3rd.
Co-bred by Hurstland with Jamie Greene, Destino d'Oro inched closer to the $1 million mark in earnings (now at $949,844) with six wins from nine starts. She is one of five winners produced by Gr1-placed Heart of Destiny.
